Skills
and exam advice
History at VCE level and beyond is difficult, complex and requires an array of skills that many students haven't previously encountered. Analysis of sources and evidence - particularly visual representations - requires identification of symbols, contextualisation and critical thinking. Essay writing is daunting for most and tests the organisational and writing skills of even stronger students. Above all, the end of year examination requires students to show their knowledge of the whole course in a variety of formats, each needing strong clarity, good organisation and concise expression.
This section of vcehistory.info provides students with the tools to improve their skills, their understanding of the course and essential exam techniques. The range of useful documents includes a dictionary of key terms encountered in revolutions, as well as a hand-out to introduce students to the complex study of historiography. The site also includes a break-down of the exam sections and parts, access to the exam sections of the Discussion Forum and, in September of each year, a full sample exam followed by exemplar responses.
